Celtic Wrestling
These holds were described to me as "What the Irish have been using against the English for four hundred years!" They were taught to me by Tim Geoghegan who had some success touring the world and wrestling in many of the major countries.
Class safety is all important in this class and classes usually take place in the spring when we can get on grass and it's warm enough to not have too many thick clothes like big coats etc.
The class is a good opportunity to learn basic anatomy and vital points along with the significance of strength and leverage. I usually teach rudimentary physical therapy and massage with this class since it "normalizes" the body after the torque and wrenching of wrestling movements.
Whereas orthodox agricultural wrestling world-wide is based on taking hold and/or knocking someone down, this wrestling is about getting a hold whether standing or on the ground and keeping it. Since the holds are painful the students are taught to tap or signal and whoever is putting on the hold is taught to be watchful.
These classes are NOT taught to children. When I teach children we do lifting and throwing tactics without holds per se.
These are some of the tactics practiced:
1. holds to the head
2. holds to the neck
3. holds to the arm and hand
4. waist scissors and strangle/choke
5. waist squeeze with forearms
6. leg pick up and toe/leg holds; hooking (which then can be applied from leg to arm to neck to head).
