About the Gao Ba Gua Workbook

By Allen Pittman

This book is not a typical “how-to” martial arts book. It is part philosophical treatise, part health manual and part self defense text. Moreover, it is not meant to be comprehensive — it is meant to be a springboard which will assist the student by adding to their own developing way of life.

The chapters of this book correspond to the eight houses or Guas of Ba Gua (pronounced Ba-gwa) theory. Within each chapter, the meaning of the Gua is explored in terms of its philosophical, anatomical, and cross-cultural connections in addition to its physical movements. I believe this is the best way to learn the art of Ba Gua “boxing” in that it allows the student entry into a wider vista of relationships, and relates the “martial art” to life itself. In doing so the student has wider mnemonic associations and can see the living aspect of the philosophy of Ba Gua.

The Gao system of Ba Gua discussed in this book has been arranged very deliberately, and I have found it wise to treat its systematic presentation with respect. To the beginner, some of the movements may seem puzzling. As the student learns more of the art, a systematic pattern emerges and the movements are seen in their proper context. Indeed, the traditional arrangements of the hexagrams show a conscious design which includes deliberate inconsistencies. These inconsistencies point to a larger underlying patter which, when understood, promotes growth in the student. Breaking the symmetry with inconsistencies forces the student to question the method and seek deeper understanding of its meaning.
